Every child experiences the world through their senses. The sounds they hear, the textures they touch, the movements they make, the sights they see, and the sensations they feel all provide important information about their surroundings. For some children, however, processing and responding to these sensory experiences can be challenging. This may affect their attention, learning, play, communication, behaviour, and participation in everyday activities.
Sensory Integration Therapy is an approach that helps children develop more effective ways of processing and responding to sensory information. Through carefully planned, play-based activities, children are provided with opportunities to experience different types of sensory input in a structured and supportive environment.
Activities may involve movement, balance, touch, body awareness, coordination, and other sensory experiences. The specific activities and goals are individualized according to the child’s developmental profile and functional needs.
Sensory challenges can sometimes be observed through behaviours such as avoiding certain textures, becoming uncomfortable with particular sounds, seeking excessive movement, having difficulty sitting or concentrating, or finding everyday activities overwhelming. However, every child is different, and these behaviours can have many possible causes. A proper developmental assessment is therefore an important first step in understanding a child’s needs.
At the Child Development Centre, KGMU Lucknow, therapy is planned with attention to the child’s individual strengths, challenges, and developmental goals. The aim is not simply to provide sensory experiences, but to help children participate more comfortably and successfully in meaningful everyday activities.
With the right support, small changes can make a significant difference.
When children are supported in understanding the world around them, they can explore, learn, play, and grow with greater confidence.
